Demagogues and Cults of Personality

That’s my opinion of Louis Farrakhan . . . and, yes, I’m also talking about Kokayi Nosakhere.

In 1995, Nosakhere traveled to Washington DC, where he attended the Million Man March; in a February 2020 article, he was described as: “An activist. A soldier. A union leader. A city councilman. A poet.”

You might want to add Black nationalist or Black separatist to that.

Yes.

That’s my opinion of him.

Nosakhere’s idol worship of Louis Farrakhan is disturbing when you learn about the Nation of Islam leader’s bigotry, antisemitism and hateful views on the LGBTQ community. Whenever someone—usually me—brings up Farrakhan’s ugly, hateful rhetoric, Nosakhere never responds, never explains why he venerates Farrakhan so much.

In fact, during one of his classes—Nosakhere advocates community building and his version of fighting racism—he claimed that a woman inquired about his views on Farrakhan and NOI beliefs. Nosakhere’s response was to refund the woman’s money and told here to leave,

Nosakhere’s ego and pettiness—I believe—flares up when people question or challenge him.

You see, Nosakhere has cultivated a cult of personality over the years and they defend him by launching personal attacks. One Nosakhere critic told me they were also attacked and harassed with Facebook instant messenger and even emails. If Nosakhere’s minons discover a person’s secret or painful memory, it’s weaponized.

In the past, Farrakhan has said:

• “You (Ashkenazi Jews) wicked deceivers of the American people. You have sucked their blood. You are not real Jews, those of you that are not real Jews. You are the synagogue of Satan, and you have wrapped your tentacles around the U.S. government, and you are deceiving and sending this nation to hell. But I warn you in the name of Allah, you would be wise to leave me alone. But if you choose to crucify me, know that Allah will crucify you.”

• “Pedophilia and sexual perversion institutionalized in Hollywood and the entertainment industries can be traced to Talmudic principles and Jewish influence. Not Jewish influence, Satanic influence under the name of Jew.”

• “You are the master of segregation…You brought that to South Africa, you brought it to America, and we have suffered under American apartheid which you sanctified by the Hamitic course…how dare you write us down as the hater when your life in America, your life in Africa, your life in the Holy Land is one of segregation, separation, hatred, murder, lying, and stealing land from the original Palestinians?”

Farrakhan ( born Louis Eugene Walcott, May 11, 1933, New York City) excelled in high school but left college in 1953 to care for his pregnant wife. After hearing Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad in Chicago in 1955, he joined Temple #7 in Harlem under Malcolm X and by 1957 was minister of Boston’s Temple #11.

The Nation of Islam advocates black separatism—forming an independent nation, tax exemption until equal justice, and banning interracial marriage—based on Elijah Muhammad’s doctrines. Its mythology holds that a black God created the original humans, while white people were engineered by the evil scientist Yakub via eugenics and are inherently deceitful; consequently, whites are barred from NOI.

NOI also embraces UFOs. In his book The Divine Destruction of America: Can She Avoid It?, Farrakhan calls them costly “mother wheels” built in Japan by the “original scientists.”

This is a long read but it covers most of the hateful rhetoric Farrakhan has uttered over the years. Rhetoric, I should remind everyone, that Nosakhere refuses to denounce.

I feel that both Farrakhan and Nosakhere have hateful agendas. Keep asking Nosakhere about Farrakhan's history of antisemitic remarks and other hate speech. It's odd that someone who claims to be a community builder and peace advocate refuses to denounce hate.

The 1970s TV Science Fiction Renaissance: Alternative 3

 

Alternative 3. Origanally intended as an April Fool's joke but delayed due to srtrike, succeeded at frightening audiences and starting an intricate, bizarre conspiracy that's lasted for more than nearly 50 years.

On June 20, 1977, Anglia Television—a regional ITV licensee—aired a program called Alternative 3 as part of its allegedly factual Science Report series. The broadcast alleged the existence of a covert international conspiracy to relocate Earth’s brightest minds to Mars ahead of an imminent environmental collapse. It was, in fact, a hoax, conceived for April Fool’s Day but delayed into summer by industrial action, a shift in timing that cost it its satirical framing and sent the public into a panic not unlike that which followed Orson Welles’ 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast. What follows is a comprehensive examination of how the program was made, what anxieties of the 1970s it drew upon, how it expanded through novelization, and why it persists today as a self-referential myth shaping public interpretation of scientific disappearances and global catastrophe.

The reception of Alternative 3 cannot be divorced from the instability that characterized the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Skyrocketing unemployment, persistent industrial strikes, the threat of nuclear conflict, and the immediate violence of the IRA’s bombing campaigns had produced a public with a bifurcated relationship to authority: Political leadership was viewed with increasing cynicism, while the institutional voice of television science programming retained a high degree of implicit trust.

David Ambrose built his script around the "brain drain"—the very real and well-documented flight of British scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to better-paid positions in the United States and Australia. Recast as a pattern of sinister, state-sponsored disappearances, this familiar socioeconomic trend became the production's most effective tool, collapsing the distance between documented reality and paranoid invention.

The implication was clear: These professionals had not left for better salaries. They had been taken.

Among the production's more prescient choices was its early deployment of the "Greenhouse Effect"—at the time an obscure academic concern—as the conspiracy's existential engine. Ambrose, in consultation with science advisor Arthur Garrett, needed a MacGuffin sufficient to justify abandoning Earth entirely. Garrett proposed global warming, then essentially unknown outside specialist literature. Ambrose seized on it not out of conviction but because it had, in his words, a "horrible feel of truth." It was a cynical narrative calculation that would prove, in retrospect, uncomfortably accurate.

Director Christopher Miles approached the technical execution of Alternative 3 as an exercise in subverting the documentary form from within. The production used period-appropriate film stock and then deliberately degraded it—Miles repeatedly returning footage to the processing labs with instructions to scratch and ruin it. The technicians were baffled. The effect, however, was exactly what Miles wanted: the grainy, damaged look of material that had been suppressed, recovered, and was never meant to be seen.

No single element of the production proved more disarming than the decision to cast Tim Brinton in the presenter's role. A veteran newsreader whose face had become inseparable from the ITV news infrastructure, Brinton carried with him an accumulated institutional authority that no actor could have replicated. His presence effectively neutralized the viewer' s critical faculty—the outlandishness of the program's claims was absorbed and defused by the simple fact that they were being delivered by a man the public had spent years trusting to tell them the truth.

At the narrative center of the program was an alleged clandestine summit convened by world leaders in 1957, called in response to the accelerating environmental deterioration of the planet. From this meeting emerged a taxonomy of proposed responses—each assigned a number and collectively referred to as the “Alternatives”—representing the scientific community’s attempts to chart a course away from total human extinction in the face of pollution and catastrophic climate change.

Alternative 1: The drastic and immediate reduction of the human population through artificial means. Dismissed as insufficient for long-term survival.

Alternative 2: The construction of vast underground shelters to house the elite and a representative cross-section of the population. Seen as a temporary measure; reminiscent of the bunker in Dr. Strangelove.

Alternative 3: The colonization of Mars via a waystation on the Moon, utilizing secret Soviet-American collaboration. The “true” conspiracy revealed to be in active operation since the 1960s.

According to the program's central thesis, the public spectacle of the space race served as elaborate misdirection, concealing a covert joint American-Soviet initiative to establish permanent bases on Mars—an undertaking made urgent by the conclusion that Earth' s biosphere had perhaps decades remaining. The program’s climax arrived in the form of a purportedly “decoded” videotape documenting a classified crewed landing on Mars in May 1962, in which footage from an unmanned surface probe appeared to capture movement beneath the Martian soil, while a mission controller’s voice could be heard declaring, “We have life!”

The casting strategy balanced recognizable faces against unknown performers to sustain the illusion of genuine investigative journalism. Shane Rimmer—familiar to British audiences through his voice work on Thunderbirds and recurring appearances in the Bond franchise—portrayed Bob Grodin, a man unraveling under the weight of what he had witnessed on the Moon. Richard Marner, years before his celebrated turn in ‘Allo ‘Allo!, inhabited Dr. Gerstein with such clinical conviction that a significant portion of the viewing public took him for an actual Nobel-caliber researcher. Smaller roles— George Pendlebury, played by Ivor Roberts, and Doreen Patterson, played by Nancy Adams—populated the margins of the narrative, lending the broader story of vanished scientists and grieving families its texture of mundane, bureaucratic tragedy.

On June 20, 1977, Alternative 3 aired well after its intended April Fools’ slot, triggering widespread panic. Without the holiday context, many viewers took the program as a real emergency bulletin about a secret Mars colonization plan. Anglia Television and major newspapers were bombarded with calls demanding colony selection details or decrying the “cover-up.” The Daily Express next morning headlined public “ shock and horror.” Although Anglia and ITV swiftly labeled it a hoax, many interpreted that denial as further proof of conspiracy, and the show— which never aired again—became “evidence” of suppression.

In 1978 journalist Leslie Watkins novelized David Ambrose’s script, replacing fictional witnesses with real Apollo astronauts like Buzz Aldrin and Edgar Mitchell to bolster believability, especially for U.S. readers. Watkins later claimed intelligence agencies tapped his phone and forced her into exile—a story that only deepened the mythology.

Then, in 1993, researcher Jim Keith’s Casebook on Alternative 3 tied the broadcast into New World Order and UFO conspiracies, arguing the original hoax served as plausible deniability for genuine clandestine projects.

Keith expanded the original conceit to include slave labor in space colonies, mass kidnapping, and brainwashing—even proposing that the “Alternative 3” framework provided ideal cover for a shadowy elite manufacturing an extraterrestrial threat. He connected the program to the Jonestown Massacre as a psychological operations test, Illuminati management of the space-colonization enterprise and the mind- control of abducted scientists. By framing the hoax as a “double-bluff,” Keith rendered the Alternative 3 myth permanently un-debunkable: any admission of fiction became simply another layer of institutional deception.

Alternative 3 established a template that speculative fiction has returned to repeatedly: the government concealing an existential truth, and institutional trust weaponized against the public.

Its clearest heir is The X-Files. Chris Carter's “myth arc” episodes—built around a global conspiracy to manage alien colonization—share the same psychological DNA as the 1977 broadcast. The show’s foundational premise, that extraterrestrial reality is being actively suppressed by the state, is Alternative 3 with a larger budget and a longer run.

Several specific episodes trace the lineage directly. “The Erlenmeyer Flask” closes the first season with alien DNA, hybrid experimentation, and the murder of Deep Throat— an informant who, like Bob Grodin, is destroyed for attempting to surface suppressed evidence. “Anasazi” pivots on a stolen digital tape containing proof of a worldwide conspiracy, mirroring the Ballantine tape plot, while its central image— an entire civilization vanishing without record—echoes the missing scientists thread. “Ice” and “Darkness Falls” both stage the arrival of ancient organisms that predate and threaten human dominance, a direct extension of the Martian life reveal. The series tagline, “Trust No One,” reads almost as a mission statement for what Alternative 3 had already accomplished.

Alternative 3 pioneered—fake news as dramatic grammar—resurfaced in Special Bulletin (1983), Ghostwatch (1992) and Without Warning (1994)—it remains a viable tool for filmmakers today.

Perhaps the most telling measure of Alternative 3's staying power is the ease with which contemporary events have been absorbed into its mythology. A cluster of high-profile deaths and disappearances among scientists working in sensitive government research, occurring between 2022 and 2026, required little reinterpretation to fit the original "brain drain" framework—the 1977 broadcast had, in a sense, already written the template. Official investigations returned verdicts of unrelated and varied causes. For those already convinced, this was precisely the point.

Perhaps the most telling measure of Alternative 3’s endurance is the ease with which contemporary events have been absorbed into its framework. The Alternative 3 mythos has proven most durable in its original conceit: the “missing scientists.” Modern incidents are routinely filtered through the lens of the 1977 broadcast by those who argue the program never ended. A cluster of high-profile deaths and disappearances among researchers tied to sensitive government work, occurring between 2022 and 2026, gave the mythology a second wind. Official investigations returned verdicts of varied and unrelated causes; believers catalogued the same cases as a continuation of the "brain drain" that Bob Grodin first tried to expose nearly fifty years prior.

Perhaps the most telling measure of Alternative 3’s legacy is not what it got wrong, but what it got right. Modern incidents—among them a cluster of high-profile deaths and disappearances of researchers tied to sensitive government programs between 2022 and 2026—have been routinely filtered through the lens of the 1977 broadcast by those who believe the Alternative 3 operation never ended. Official inquiries have found no common thread, but for those already disposed toward the mythology, that absence of evidence is itself evidence.

What Miles and Ambrose stumbled into, almost by accident, was a demonstration of how little separates authoritative truth from its convincing imitation. The program did not succeed because it was sophisticated. It succeeded because it was fluent—fluent in the cadences of broadcast journalism, in the grammar of institutional concern, in the particular register of a scientist reluctantly going on record. That fluency has proven more durable than any of its specific claims.   

Three properties account for its persistence. First, the medium carried more conviction than the message; Tim Brinton’s delivery was the argument. Second, the Greenhouse Effect—then a fringe anxiety—has since become the defining crisis of the century, lending the program a retroactive credibility its creators never intended. Third, and most critically, the conspiracy resists falsification by design: every debunking is absorbed as confirmation, every retraction as proof of reach.   

The result is a mythology that cannot be starved of oxygen. As long as scientists go missing, climates shift and governments keep secrets—which is to say, always—Alternative 3 will find new reasons to be believed.

HPL: The Outsider.

On this day in 1937, Howard Phillips Lovecraft passed away.

Quite unintentionally, Lovecraft created a multiverse we now call the Cthulhu Mythos. He encouraged fellow writers to contribute, from Robert Bloch and Clark Ashton Smith to C.L. Moore and Robert E. Howard. Lovecraft influenced Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell and many other writers. The Cthulhu Mythos can be found in RPGs, comics and films too.

The Old Gent will no doubt inspire others as time goes by.

 

Lovecraft is problematic; Robert E. Howard is the same. Edgar Rice Burroughs has raised some issues as well.

Poe had his share of baggage.

People have talked about HPL's antisemitism yet at the same time, his wife Sonia Greene was Jewish, which upset Lovecraft's aunts; Robert Bloch, who was Jewish, had a very close relationship with HPL and considered him as a friend and mentor.

Thousands of Lovecraft's correspondence with friends and fellow writers have been collected over the years; yes, some of the letters reveal his deplorable views -- but it's also been noted that as Lovecraft traveled more and more, from Florida to Quebec, increased contact with other ethnicities slowly changed his views.

Plus, many in the Lovecraft Circle held more progressive views and their communication with Lovecraft, bit by bit, eroded his views. Again, change was slow.

The HP Lovecraft Historical Society addresses the subject:

'We recognize that Lovecraft was racist in his personal views, and grapple constantly with the challenge of reconciling apprehensions about the man with appreciation for his artistic creations. We strive to recontextualize those creations for a new era. We fully agree that Black lives matter. We can’t change Lovecraft, but we can help change our world. We must evaluate the past unflinchingly, see the present honestly, and embrace changes to create a future that brings justice and equality to everyone. To pursue that change, the HPLHS donates a portion of its profits to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Further, we do our best to work with a diverse team of artists to ensure that the products we make are inclusive and welcoming to all."

Chaosium, who publishes the now classic Call of Cthulhu RPG -- now in its seventh edition and still responsible for introducing Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos to many -- share a similar response:

Q: Wasn't H.P. Lovecraft a terrible racist?

A: Yes, he was. Lovecraft was a complex and troubled person in life. He was a wonderful writer with a wondrous imagination, a friend to many, and part of a corresponding group of writers (that included Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and others) that created the genres of horror and heroic fantasy as we know it. He also wrote things that were racist, and anti-Semitic, and probably misogynistic as well. His fear of the "Other", "infecting" the body of "old stock" definitely influenced his writing, and can be seen in things like Shadows Over Innsmouth, The Horror at Red Hook, and The Thing on the Doorstep. But these were also major anxieties of his time, shared by many others—Lovecraft's horror is many of the deep fears of the modern world (and includes the fear that not only is there no benevolent God but that the "gods" are outright malevolent and hate us). Lovecraft's cosmos is a howling abyss and none dare stare too long into it without becoming a monster.

The world back then was darker as open displays of racism and antisemitism were not only acceptable but even encouraged. Segregation and even eugenics were legal throughout the United States.

Today, we value the Constitution yet we have to remind ourselves that the Founding Fathers themselves didn't have progressive views. We have to remember that Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other suffragists held racist views as well.

Today, many people who read and love the Cthulhu Mythos and even write it are also Jewish, LGBTQ, POC -- Lovecraft events draw a wildly diverse group of fans, scholars and writers.

Lovecraft and others who wrote Cthulhu Mythos stories have been a big influence on my own writing. I love those stories. But I don't forget that Lovecraft and Howard had some beliefs I strongly disagree with.

The Fantastic Journey was an American science fiction television series that was originally aired on NBC from February 3 through June 16, 1977. It was originally intended to run 13 episodes, as a mid-season replacement, but NBC cancelled the series in April, after the ninth episode aired. A tenth episode, already produced, was broadcast two months later.

Star Wars was still a few months away but the Bermuda Triangle was popular, thanks to Charles Berlitz’ bestselling book—which spawned more books about the Triangle and even a number of documentaries and TV specials. Hollywood wanted to cash in on the craze.

Writer-producer Bruce Lansbury—Angela’s brother—had an idea for a series. Lansbury was the creative force behind such wildly popular genre favorites, The Wild, Wild West and Mission: Impossible, presented the story of a group of scientists and adventurers who find themselves trapped in the Triangle and throughout the series, they’d travel from one time zone to the next, seeking the right portal that will take them home.

D.C. “Dorothy” Fontana—who wrote some of the best Star Trek episodes—was hired to work in the writers’ room.

A scientific expedition brings a family and their colleagues to the Caribbean aboard a chartered vessel—crewed by veteran character actors, Leif Ericson and Scott Brady. Their journey takes an unexpected turn in the Bermuda Triangle when they sail through an otherworldly green mist filled with phantom bell sounds. The encounter leaves them stranded on an enigmatic island with no apparent way to return home.

The main characters:

Varian (Jared Martin) is a man from the 23rd century endowed with extraordinary abilities channeled through a crystalline “ tuning fork” device called the Sonic Energizer. By focusing his thoughts into the Energizer, he can manipulate matter sonically—unlocking doors, disrupting electrical systems, unleashing widespread destruction, or performing diagnostics and healing. The device responds only to him. When Professor Paul Jordan departs at the end of the pilot film, Varian steps in as the group’s de facto leader and assumes a fatherly role toward Jordan’ s teenage son, Scott—a dynamic highlighted in episodes like “ An Act of Love” and “ Turnabout.”

Scott Jordan (Ike Eisenmann) is the 13-year-old son of a prominent scientist. Though he possesses a solid understanding of Earth’s history and major events, his youth means he still has plenty to learn.

Dr. Fred Walters (Carl Franklin) is a newly graduated physician whose hot-headed, impulsive nature contrasts sharply with Varian’s calm pacifism. A longtime friend of Scott’s father and the only other member of the team from their original era, the athletic Black doctor naturally takes on a protective, older-brother role with Scott.

Liana (Katie Saylor) is born of an Atlantean father and an extraterrestrial mother. Her alien heritage grants her superhuman strength—owing to her mother’s high-gravity home world—and powerful psychic abilities, such as telepathic communication with animals, especially her cat, Sil-El. Saylor left the series after “Turnabout” due to illness; in the subsequent episode, “Riddles,” it’s explained that Liana stayed behind on Coriel to help its inhabitants establish a new government and would rejoin the travelers later.

Dr. Jonathan Willoway (Roddy McDowall) is a rebel scientist from the 1960s whose mastery of computers, robotics, and scientific theory proves invaluable. He resembles Lost in Space’s Dr. Smith in his untrustworthy, self-interested streak, though he lacks Smith’s cowardice. Over time, Willoway forms genuine bonds with Scott and the others, becoming more integrated into the group—despite Dr. Walters’s lingering mistrust, which fuels a constant, Spock-and-McCoy–style banter between them.

Sil-El (the Felix Team) is Liana’s tuxedo cat and telepathic companion. Often sent ahead as her eyes and ears, Sil-El scouts dangerous territory and relays vital information back to her.

The pilot episode "Vortex" concludes with the departure of Professor Paul Jordan, Scott's father, from the series. While exploring Atlantium, the travelers become separated. Later, Scott learns from the Atlanteans that his father and two companions have been transported back to their own time period. Dar-L, an Atlantean leader, hands Scott a letter purportedly from his father. In it, the Professor reassures his son that Varian and Fred will protect him, while explaining he must return to Scott's mother, who waits anxiously at home.

This narrative decision facilitated the show's cast reorganization but struck many viewers as implausible—what father would willingly leave his teenage son stranded in a perilous interdimensional realm?

Nearly 50 years later, The Fantastic Journey had the potential of being a fascinating series, given it had survived and given a few 22-episode run. The Triangle and its myriad Time Zones offered a wealth of interesting cultures and equally intriguing storylines. Like many of these '70s' SF series, there was a lot of cheesy fun and wonderful characters that deserved more than one mere season of storytelling. I rewatched the entire 10-episode run on the Sci-Fi Channel—back when the Sci-Fi Channel lived up to its name and was cool to watch—and I loved it. The 28-year-old me loved it as much as the 12-year-old me; the writing was fine and the actors did a good job, despite budgetary limitations. Thanks to the miracle of DVDs, the first season is in my library.

After the series cancellation, most of the writers and production crew would go onto to work on another one season wonder, Logan’s Run.

But that’s a blog for another day.

Xmas Traditions Across the Earth

From Icelandic book floods and Japanese families eating KFC to entire Peruvian villages staging single combat events, different cultures have their own offbeat and even bewildering holiday traditions 

‘Tis the season to talk about Christmas traditions throughout the world.

For years, people have embraced the so-called fictional holiday, Festivus. The holiday was first mentioned in an episode of Seinfeld. Personally, I never liked the show—I found all the characters highly annoying and unlikeable–but I did find the idea of Festivus amusing. Reportedly, a Seinfeld staff writer’s family had been celebrating Festivus since 1966; Dan O’Keefe’s father Daniel had the holiday as an anniversary celebration of his first date with future wife and Dan’s mother, Deborah. As detailed in the December 23, 1997, episode, “The Strike,” there are the “airing of grievances,” that happens during dinner: Yes, each person present describes how others have disappointed them over the past year. Afterwards, “feats of strength” ensue, including and in which each person tells everyone else all the ways they have disappointed them over the past year. After the meal, the “feats of strength” ensue, including wrestling with the head of the household to the floor . . . and if and when they’re pinned, the holiday concludes.

According to O’Keefe, there was never a Festivus Pole.

Since then, throughout the world, yes, Festivus has been celebrated on Dec. 23.

However, for many years, a similar holiday tradition has been celebrated in Chumbivilcas, a Peruvian province in the Cusco Region. It’s called Takanakuy—in regional language Quechua, it means “when the blood is boiling” or “to hit each other,” depending on the source.

On Christmas Day, communities throughout Latin America typically hold large public celebrations, with people in colorful costumes, lots of food, drink, music and dancing. In communities throughout the Cusco Region, however, celebrants flock to the local sporting arenas or public squares for Takanakuy and watch as people of all ages, kids to the elderly, men and women alike, engage in fist fights.

Yes.

Single combat.

Takanakuy is how grievances that people have had with one another over the past year. Be they personal matters or civil disputes, two people slug it out after calling one another out by name. The victor is decided by knockout or intervention by an official. According to tradition, Takanakuy is how people settle conflicts and resolve to spend the new year living peacefully with one another, strengthening community and even familial bonds.

Until more grievances arise.

The Philippines has the highest population of Catholics in the world. At midnight Sept. 1, radio stations start playing Christmas music, lights and decorations appearing everywhere. The city of San Fernando, known as the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines,” hosts Ligligan Parul Sampernandu, the Giant Lantern Festival. Surrounding villages compete against one another as they build large, elaborate lanterns; Japanese origami paper was originally used but now more modern materials are used and the lanterns with their kaleidoscope patterns are lit up by lightbulbs rather than candles.

Some lanterns can be nearly 20 feet in diameter.

In Japan, Christmas isn’t a national holiday but some still observe it . . . and eating chicken, Kentucky Fried Chicken in particular. Back in 1974, some savvy salaryman came up with a marketing campaign called “Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii” or “Kentucky for Christmas.” Ever since then, Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii has proven to be extremely popular in Japan. How popular? Well, KFC restaurants start taking advance orders for holiday meals as far back in September or October or it’s a two- or three-hour long lines of people wanting their Christmas chicken meal. Employees also dress as Santa Claus too.

Iceland has a number of Christmas traditions. A small nation yet one with one of the highest literacy rates, there’s the Jólabókaflóðið—the Christmas Book Flood. On Christmas Eve, books—the most popular holiday gift in Iceland—are exchanged and people stay up all night, reading their new books and drinking hot chocolate.

And while most countries observe the 12 Days of Christmas, Iceland has thirteen. Each night leading up to Christmas, the thirteen Yule Lads make their rounds as kids place one shoe in their bedroom window. Good kids get candy and the bad ones get rotten, stinking potatoes. The Yule Lads are elf-like creatures and were once depicted as being malevolent at times. Over the years, they’ve become more mischievous.

Their mother Grýla, however, is a horrific ogress living in the mountains. She’s always on the prowl around Christmas, searching for naughty children to throw in her cauldron of boiling hot water.

Icelandic folklore also has a large black cat that prowls the country on Christmas Eve–Festivus,everyone must get new clothes and if not, the Christmas Cat will kill and eat them.

Be thankful for those new socks or ties, okay?

In Barbados at Christmastime, people eat Jug: Influenced by Scottish immigrants, it’s a dish that combines salted meat, pigeon peas, guinea corn flour and herbs. Glazed ham and rum also round out holiday meals.

Going back to pagan beliefs, on Christmas Eve, Norwegians hide all the household brooms in closets, in the fear that evil witches will take them and fly about all night.

That said, in parts of Italy, a good witch named Belfana travels about, leaving gifts and candy for kids.

Instead of candy, kids in South Africa snack on delicious fried caterpillars. Seriously.

If you’re ever in Caracas, Venezuela during Christmastime, be prepared to see people wearing roller blades; skating to church services is so common that officials keep vehicles off the roads.

For years now, people have Christmas dinner at Chinese restaurants. Over a century ago, Jewish immigrants could dine out on Christmas because everything was shutdown. Save for Chinese restaurants. By the late 19th Century, Jewish and Chinese immigrants often lived close to one another, so, proximity was a factor. Another was that the Chinese didn’t adhere to antisemitic views held by other European immigrants or Americans. They felt safe there.

As New York restauranter Michael Tong said in a 2003 New York Times interview:

“Welcome to the conundrum that is Christmas New York style: While most restaurants close for the holiday, or in a few cases, stay open and serve a prix fixe meal laden with froufrou, thousands of diners, most of them Jewish, are faced with a dilemma. There's nothing to celebrate at home and no place to eat out, at least if they want a regular dinner. That leaves Chinese restaurants . . . .”

When the film A Christmas Story was released in November 1983, the practice of having Chinese food for a holiday meal gained more popularity overnight.

A Smith family Xmas Eve traditon was Granny serving both chili and oyster stew. It's been years since I've had that. That said, I have my own Xmas tradition: Chinese buffet lunch. Every year, it's domething I look forward to.

THE SATANIC PANIC WAS A HOAX LIKE PIZZAGATE AND QANON.

I had to write that in all caps. I needed to get everyone's attention.

Religious alt-right "paranormal investigators" are attempting to start another "Satanic Panic" and we can't let that happen again.

The McMartin School trials.

The miscarriage of justice surrounding the Memphis Three.

We have to stop it. Let's look at what happened in the past.

The "Satanic Panic" was a widespread moral panic and hoax that occurred primarily in North America from the 1980s to the mid-1990s, based on unsubstantiated fears of a vast, secretive network of Satan-worshipping cults engaging in organized child abuse, sacrifice and other crimes. These claims were proven to be entirely baseless, and no credible evidence of such a conspiracy was ever found by law enforcement or psychological experts. 

Origins and Spread:

Michelle Remembers (1980): The book, co-written by a psychiatrist and his patient, which detailed alleged "recovered memories" of satanic ritual abuse (SRA), helped spark the panic and provided a template for future claims.

Media Frenzy: Daytime talk shows and news programs, such as those hosted by Geraldo Rivera and Oprah Winfrey, uncritically reported sensationalist stories and "expert" testimony about SRA, amplifying the fear across the nation.

Recovered-Memory Therapy: Therapists used controversial and now-discredited techniques like hypnosis and leading questions to help patients "recover" memories of abuse, often inadvertently planting false memories.

Cultural Scapegoats: Anxiety over societal changes, such as more women entering the workforce and an increased reliance on daycares, led to these centers becoming primary targets for accusations. Other forms of popular culture, including heavy metal music and role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, were also falsely accused of being recruitment tools for cults. 

Key Cases and Debunking

McMartin Preschool Trial: This highly publicized California case (1983-1990) became the longest and most expensive criminal trial in U.S. history. Despite years of investigation and hundreds of accusations, no one was convicted due to a lack of physical evidence and the use of coercive child interviewing techniques.

West Memphis Three: Three teenagers were wrongfully convicted of murder in 1994 based on the prosecution's claim that the killings were part of a Satanic ritual. They were later freed in 2011 after new DNA evidence and an admission that the initial evidence was faulty.

Lack of Evidence: A major 1995 report by the National Institute of Justice concluded there was "scant to non-existent" hard evidence for large-scale satanic ritual abuse. The FBI also found no evidence of an organized, nationwide Satanic conspiracy. 

Legacy: The Satanic Panic is now widely regarded as a classic example of a moral panic and a modern-day "witch hunt," where mass hysteria leRd to ruined reputations, wrongful convictions, and the neglect of genuine child abuse issues. Elements of these debunked claims have unfortunately resurfaced in modern conspiracy theories like QAnon, which echo the same baseless fears of child-abusing cabals.

Lost in Hollywood History: The First Cinematic Universe

 

It was on 5 March 1943 when Hollywood introduced the first cinematic universe to the world.

The was the date when Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man had its New York premier—a week later, it would have its nationwide opening. The film was a sequel of sorts to both The Ghost of Frankenstein and The Wolf Man . . . interestingly, Lon Chaney Jr. played the titular monsters in those films. This time around, he reprises his role as the tragic, cursed Larry Talbot and Bela Lugosi appeared as the Creature; in fact, it was originally planned that Chaney would play both roles but it proved to be way too physically demanding for him.

The script was written Curt Siodmak, German-American novelist and screenwriter, who wrote primarily science fiction and horror. Roy William Neill directed the film.

Four years have passed since the Wolf Man’s ravages and the specter of Frankenstein’s progeny. On a wind-whipped night in Cardiff, two tomb-raiders—one of whom played by famed character actor Jeff Corey—pry open the Talbot family crypt under the full moon’s glow. They snatched the wolfsbane that sealed Larry Talbot’s fate. Moonlight strikes his motionless body, ignites the dormant curse—and Larry rises from death.

That’s another facet of Talbot’s curse: Immortality.

Talbot, through some misadventures, meets Dr. Frank Mannering (Patric Knowles); begs Mannering to alert the authorities before he kills again. Mannering and the police find the Talbot family tomb, discovering the truth; an escaped Talbot, haunted by his immortality and lycanthrope nature, flees Wales to seek out the Romni seer Maleva. She whispers of Dr. Frankenstein’s lost research as the only possible cure. Together they traverse Europe toward the scorched ruins of Frankenstein’s Vasaria estate, each step a gamble with fate.

Once there, Talbot discovers an ice-encased Creature and breaks him—hoping the Creature will lead him to the knowledge that will free him of the curse. Events happen and all leads to the inevitable clash between the Wolf Man and the Creature. Both Talbot and the Creature are swept up in a flood and lost.

Despite lukewarm reviews, the film did well and Universal Studios planned a sequel. Studio press releases called the film, Chamber of Horrors, hyping it as a monsterfest spectacular starring Lugosi, Chaney, Boris Karloff, Claude Rains and other Universal horror film stars. Dracula. The Frankenstein Creature. The Wolf Man. The Invisible Man. Kharis, the Eternal Mummy. It was billed as a horror film fan’s dream—or nightmare—come true. Siodmak wrote the screen story, this one called The Devil’s Brood. It promised to be an ambitious project.

Alas, I guess, it was too ambitious.

Edward T. Lowe wrote the screenplay, keeping some of Siodmak’s elements and Erle C. Kenton would helm the film; Karloff would star as Dr. Gustav Niemann, the mad scientist, John Carradine as Dracula, Glenn Strange as the Frankenstein Creature and J. Carrol Naish as Daniel, a hunchback convicted of murder. Ladies and gentlemen . . . your monsters.

Not the hyped monsterfest some were promised but, nonetheless, it would bring in the fans.

At the beginning of the film, Niemann’s obsession with reanimation lands him in a dank prison cell, condemned for trying to duplicate Frankenstein’s forbidden work. There he meets Daniel, a hulking hunchback whose twisted body Niemann promises to rebuild once free—if Daniel will serve as his assistant. When an earthquake shatters the prison walls, the pair slips into the night.

As they flee, the pair meets a traveling showman, Professor Lampini. In a savage moment of ambition, Niemann and Daniel murder Lampini and seize his prized showcase: Dracula’s embalmed remains. Niemann, hell-bent on revenge against Burgomaster Hussman—the man responsible for his incarceration—rests his plans on Dracula’s revival. Under flickering lantern light, he awakens the vampire and sends him stalking the Burgomaster’s granddaughter-in-law, Rita. Hypnotized, she leads Dracula to Hussman’s manor, where the old ruler falls under fang and bite. The Burgomaster’s grandson sees the horror and raises the alarm. As screaming citizens give chase, Dracula scrambles back to the carriage where Niemann waits—only to find himself jettisoned into the road. Dawn breaks, and the rising sun turns him to dust.

Undeterred, Niemann and Daniel press on to the flooded ruins of Castle Frankenstein in Visaria/Vasaria. On the way, Daniel rescues Ilonka, a spirited Romani woman, from a jealous lover’s whip. Grateful and intrigued by Daniel’s gentleness, she joins their expedition. Upon reaching ruins of Castle Frankenstein, they find Talbot and the Creature. A love triangle forms between Talbot, Ilonka and Daniel

Chaos and monster-on-monster violence ensues.

While the film doesn’t hit the scare level of the original Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolf Man films, House of Frankenstein did thrill its fanbase and, again, Universal brought back Chaney, Carradine, Strange, screenwriter Lowe and director Kenton.

Carradine’s rather suave, dapper Dracula seeks cure for vampirism from Dr. Edelmann (Onslow Stevens), who uses his own blood for transfusions—with unexpected side effects. Meanwhile, Larry Talbot arrives seeking relief from werewolf curse. After transforming into Wolf Man under full moon, he's taken to Edelmann's castle. When Talbot attempts suicide by jumping into ocean, he discovers cave holding the Creature. Despite finding rare fungi that might cure lycanthropy, Edelmann hesitates to revive the Creature—at the same time, the good doctor undergoes a very nasty metamorphosis of his own . . . and it doesn’t go well.

House of Dracula would be the final Universal Studio’s final “serious” film featuring their classic monsters. It was an end of an era. In 1948, Universal released Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein—reuniting Chaney and Strange with Lugosi returning as Dracula—and the film became a classic and spawned more Abbott and Costello films featuring other Universal monsters.

None of them were as good as A&CMF.

The Gillman—the creature from the Black Lagoon—joined the Universal Monsters’ pantheon and people loved it. However, Universal Studios shifted gears: Giant, mutated creatures and alien invaders thrilled audiences throughout the 1950s. Universal released its final vampire film, a hybrid Western/vampiric gunslinger film called Curse of the Undead.

And that, you see, was the first cinematic universe. It was brief, silly, some would say, but damn, it was glorious for us fans. Those three films really ignited our imaginations and some found the inspiration to become storytellers, writers and directors. Makeup FX. What have you.

The Japanese Kaiju films introduced Gojira/Godzilla and Gamera and their respective cinematic universes. In 1987, Monster Squad reunited versions of the Universal Horror movies and 2004’s Van Helsing emulated the formula. A few years ago, Universal Studios  attempted to create a new shared Dark Universe—Tom Cruise’s The Mummy and The Invisible Man would be the first; however, The Mummy proved to be a disastrous flop, a critical and box office bomb.

The Dark Universe died right there.

That said, the original Universal Horror cinematic universe gave way to the MCU, the Arrowverse, the new DCU and the ever-expanding Star Wars Universe.

I’d love to see another Dark Universe reboot. Maybe it will happen but I have some doubts.

Who knows?

Today, I watched those three films and it brought back a lot of memories. Good memories.

My Own Private Reset . . . .

 And . . . I’m back!

Sometimes—as we all know—things don’t go as planned, this blog, for example. Until serious health issues happened, I had a lot of big plans . . . I still do but there’s a lot of catching up to do. Like my series of articles about the TV series produced in the 1970s; with Hallowe’en over 80-plus days away, expect some paranormal-themed articles and a look at the first cinematic universe, the Universal horror films. I’ll also write about paranormal podcasts I’ve been following on YouTube—there a lot of problematic even outright offensive and bad podcasts and a few good ones.

There are a lot of major genre news too. The first four episodes of Stranger Things’ fifth and final season drops on Wednesday, 26 November; the second set of episodes will hit Netflix on Xmas Eve and the last feature-length episode debuts on New Year's Eve.

December will also see Fallout’s second series dropping on Amazon Prime—now date hasn’t been released yet. This season, we’ll find Lucy, the Ghoul (aka Cooper Howard), Dogmeat and Brotherhood of Steel Knight Maximus in the quasi-civilized New Vegas. According to production photos, the New Vegas sets look great and we’ve seen NCR troopers and Rangers, salvaged NCR powered armor, Securitron robots, Deathclaws and Caesar’s Legion. In interviews, the cast have said “a lot of wild shit” happens and I’m looking to see how both character arcs and their dynamics will change.

I’m hoping all the episodes will drop at once—it worked well last season and I think they will repeat the same strategy.

So.

Will we see Felicia Day as BoS scribe, Veronica and Danny Trejo as Ghoul gunslinger, Raul Tejada? In the game, Wayne Newton voiced the AI called Mr. New Vegas and will he do it again? Actor Michael Hogan played Doc Mitchell but Hogan’s had debilitating health problems and, sadly, Matthew Perry passed a few years back—no Benny, not even flashbacks unless the character is recast. MAGAt bootlicker and actor Zacharay Levi’s Arcade Gannon might be re-casted . . . by Macaulay Culkin. I’m fine with it.
